MPC Drum Expansions FAQs

  • Are your expansions compatible with my MPC?

Our MPC expansions are built for all modern standalone MPCs, the Akai Force, the MPC Software and most expansions also work with the free MPC Beats app. Many also include a version built specifically for the MPC Sample.

Please check the 'tech specs' section of each product to confirm the exact hardware and software requirements for each individual expansion.

  • How easy is it to install your expansions?

Very easy - for standalone MPC/Force you can copy the expansion to the 'Expansions' folder on your MPC disk, and for use in the MPC Software simply drag the provided 'XPN' into the software. Detailed instructions can be found in our Expansion Support section.

  • Do you update your expansions?

Yes, we often provide updates to ensure the expansions remain compatible with the latest MPC firmware releases. We also add new features and improvements to existing products - for example we've updated many of our drum kits and multisampled instruments to take advantage of new MPC3 features that allow us to combine velocity switching and round robins.

  • Are your drum kits fully set up and ready-to-play?

Yes, all our drum kits are fully configured as playable kits, with our acoustic kits utilising the same, colour-coded finger drumming layout across all expansions. Just load a kit to a track in your project and instantly start playing.

  • Can I change the sound and settings in my drum kits, kist like I can in a plugin?

Yes, most of our kits come with pre-configured Q-LINK macros that provide easy, hands-on control of a range of essential sound design and FX parameters including lofi FX, ambience, EQ, compression, filters and dynamics. You can also dive into 'track edit' to make any deeper changes you wish.

  • What are MIDI patterns?

MIDI patterns provide a library of drum grooves played by a real drummer, so are packed with human groove and feel. These can be paired with any of the kits to create realistic sounding drum tracks for your projects. As they are MIDI you can easily edit any aspect of the groove including 'mixing and matching' in real time with different kits until you find the perfect combo for your song.

  • How do you create your acoustic drum kits?

We've partnered with a range of different drummers over the years, each one providing his own favourite drum kit. We head down to 'Mu Studios' and record him playing each drum articulation at a variety of velocities, with multiple takes per velocity to provide us with all the round robins needed. This is followed with many weeks of careful sample editing and drum programming to create the MPC versions of the kits.

  • What is a 'Drum Library'?

These expansions contain 'one shot' drum samples organised by the type of drum instrument (kicks, snares, claps etc), with the aim of providing you with a huge collection of quality drums for building your own kits. Some of these libraries, such as Drum Kit Vault, also contain ready-made kits in addition to the one shots.

  • Can your drums be used in other samplers or DAWs?

Yes, the samples themselves are all in WAV format so can be imported into any other sampling environment that supports standard WAVs. If the expansion contains ready-made kits then the XPM or XTD files used to assign the samples to MPC pads can only be used in a supported MPC model.
