The Modern Session Kit is the latest release in our popular ' MPC Drummer ' series of acoustic drum kit expansions, featuring a professionally multisampled studio-quality drum kit, ready-to-play ‘snapshot’ kits covering a wide range of musical styles and an extensive multi-genre MIDI groove library.

The expansion is built around a rare 2010 Gatton ‘Corian’ drum kit , famed for its deep, warm sound, with a crisp attack and highly expressive dynamics. We recorded a total of 48 unique drum articulations, each presented with up to 12 velocity layers to allow for creation of incredibly detailed and realistic sounding acoustic drum performances in the MPC and Akai Force.

The kit itself comprises of the following instruments:

  • 24” Kick Drum – huge and heavy kick, recorded both ‘damped’ and ‘open’, with and without snare bleed
  • Four Toms– Two tightly tuned rack toms (12” and 13”) and two deep and booming floor toms (16” and 18”)
  • Two Snares– a meaty 14” Gatton snare and tight 10” (‘piccolo’) Gatton snare, each recorded with eight different articulations (centre, halfway, rimshot, cross stick, flam, drag, rim only, wires off)
  • Two crash cymbals– 20” and 18” Meinl Soundcaster crashes recorded with edge, centre, bell and choke articulations
  • 22” Ride- Meinl Soundcaster Fusion ride, recorded with edge, centre, bell and choke articulations
  • 14” Hi Hat- Meinl Soundcaster Fusion Hi Hat recorded with10 different articulations
  • 18” China Crash- Meinl Byzance China recorded with edge and choke
  • 8” Splash- Meinl Byzance Splash with edge and choke articulations

The kit was played by legendary drummer Bobby Arechiga at Mu Studios in England using 12 mics recorded directly through an Amek ‘Big By Langley’ desk, the same recording set up used in our 1977 Session Kit and Downbeat Kit expansions.

The 48 articulations were then edited and organised into two different kits, each with its own unique character utilising velocity switching and ‘round robin’ techniques, along with an additional 15 pre-built FX ‘snapshots’ tailored to many different musical genres such as Vintage Soul, Rock , Hip Hop, Neo Soul, Alt Rock , Funk, Drum & Bass, Chill Hop , Pop, Indie, Blues and Metal.

We’ve also matched all the snapshots with an extensive collection of original MIDI grooves all recorded by real drummer and converted into MPC MIDI data, perfectly capturing the original feel and vibe of a live drum performance.

Each MIDI groove comes with its own browser preview for quick and easy auditioning - just load a pattern to a track in your project and match it with any of the provided kits to instantly create authentic sounding acoustic drum tracks for any of your beats.

Each kit utilises the same core layout as used in all our multisampled drum kit collections such as MPC Drummer and Dirty Drummer , with colour coding for all pads and all kits highly optimised for super fast loading utilising ‘sample chains’ to achieve up to 5 times faster loading times.

The Modern Session Kit is fully compatible with any modern standalone MPC running MPC 2.11 or greater, including the MPC One / One+ , MPC Live (I & II), MPC X, MPC X SE, and MPC Key. It also fully supports the Akai Force (3.1+), MPC Software and MPC Beats. We’ve also included legacy versions of the two primary kits for the MPC1000 , MPC2500, MPC500 and MPC5000 .

You can find out more technical details about the articulations, kits and recording chain in the extensive User Guide .

FAQs

  • What is a multisampled drum kit?

Rather than use just one sample for each instrument in a kit, a multisampled drum kit contains multiple recordings of each instrument covering a range of different playing methods and techniques. For example, a snare could be provided with a 'centre' hit, a rim shot, a cross stick, flam, edge hit, roll and so on. These are called 'articulations'. Each articulation is recorded over a number of different velocities to capture the natural dynamics. The sounds are then assigned to MPC drum programs to create a very realistic sounding finger drumming kit that can be used for live performing or for sequencing in your MPC or DAW.

  • How did you get 12 velocity layers? Doesn't the MPC only have 4?

Each pad in an MPC drum kit has 4 velocity layers but we can use the 'simultaneous play' feature to link multiple pads together and spread the velocity switching ranges across multiple pads.

  • Does this expansion come with browser previews?

Yes, just select any kit in the browser and you'll hear a short audio preview made with that particular kit. We've also added browser previews to all the included MIDI grooves. For automatic playback, just make sure that you have AUDITION > AUTO set in the browser.

  • What is a round robin?

To mimic the subtle changes in timbre you can hear each time you play a note on an acoustic instrument, we record multiple 'takes' for each note and set up the MPC program to play back one of these samples randomly each time you play that particular note. This is referred to as a 'round robin'.

  • Is this easy to install in standalone MPCs and the Force?

Yes, we provide two separate installers, one for 'standalone' use and one for installation directly into the MPC Software/MPC Beats. The standalone version is simply copied directly to the 'Expansions' folder on your MPC/Force disk, the MPC Software XPN file is just dragged directly into the software. Full instructions for both standalone and MPC Software installation are provided in the included User Guide.

  • Are these kits ready to play?

Yes! All the kits have been fully pre-configured with all drums pre-mapped in a finger-drumming friendly way, with pad colours added for easy drum identification. Each kit also has all FX, filters, program parameters and mixing set up for you. Just audition the kit previews in the browser, load your chosen kit and start playing. And if you need inspiration, try loading some of the included MIDI drum patterns which will give you a set of drum grooves to work with.

  • What are MIDI Drum patterns?

Midi drum patterns are short MIDI performances which can be loaded directly to a track in an MPC/Akai force as standard MIDI events – match them with a drum kit to instantly add grooves with a 'real drummer' human feel. The tempo and contents of the resulting MIDI track are fully editable to your exact needs using standard MPC sequencing tools (e.g. grid edit, list edit etc) and you are free to assign different drum kits to the pattern until you find the exact combination you need.

  • Can I finger drum with these kits?

Absolutely - the pads are laid out in the same finger drumming friendly layout used in all our multisampled kits, this allows you to play realistic acoustic drum grooves with minimal hand movement. As with any MPC kit you can of course re-arrange the pads into any layout you prefer by using the 'COPY PADS' function.
